Check out this lovely animated/kinetic work by Juan Fontanive.

From the video description:

Juan Fontanive creates machines that combine moving images with clockwork mechanisms. His hand-made screens and metal structures are deeply influenced by the moving image — from shutters and reels to illusory flickering. Responding to the lack of movement found in our current electronics age, he is interested in actual movement in relation to virtual. His machines long to free images; they combine to form a medium in themselves exploring the vividness of living things.

Huge human figure automaton made from found objects!

You recall Rob Higgs -- the artist who created the giant wine bottle opener? Here is his latest, a large human figure with moving hands, head, eyes, and many other elements. It's a wonderful assemblage of parts. I can even spot one near to my heart and very near to the automaton's: a lyre-framed brass clock movement with its large spiral mainsprings. The video description notes that he forgot to wind clock mechanism that runs the "brain", and indeed, if you look closely you can see the winding key sticking out the back of the figure's head. It's truly incredible piece. I would expect no less from this particular artist.

A look inside Dug North's clock repair workshop

As some of you know, I made a career change last summer. I decided to switch from a computer-based job to one that was more in line with my passion for mechanical things. When I was given the opportunity to learn and do clock repair as a full time job, I had to take it. It's been an exciting and busy six months for me. I'm glad I took the leap.

Another milestone was passed back in December of 2013 when I decide to lease a space that is accessible to the public. To that point, I had been working out of my work/live condo space. That was fine for doing the work itself, but less than ideal in dealing with repair customers. I had also been buying clocks at yard sales, online, and at auctions. I have been fixing these clocks up in order to sell them. Needless to say, the foot-traffic through my condo was not all that high, nor did I want it to be. So, the new studio space in The Gates Block building in historic downtown Lowell seemed like a good fit. Here's a photo of the new space:

Recently, a reporter and photographer from The Lowell Sun newspaper paid a visit to my new clock repair shop. They produced the video you see above during the course of our time together. In it, you'll see some of my automata, some of my clocks, and some of my beloved tools.

If you've got any questions or comments, please let me know. It's been difficult for me to stay as on top of this blog as I have in years past, and I'm sorry about that. As my proficiency at clock repair grows and as I get used to running my own business, things will even out again. Printed version of 'Clockwork Game ' graphic novel is in the works and seeks support!

Clockwork Game tells the story of the legendary chess-playing automaton known as 'The Turk'. Currently, you can read the whole thing online for free. Now author and illustrator, Jane Irwin, hopes to give the story the print edition it deserves. The Kickstarter video is shown above.

‘The Flooded Arena’, an incredible clockwork automaton somewhere in London

If you are in London, and brave as well as determined, you should find your way to this exhibition and show. It's an installation based on Mark Ferelli's automaton, The Flooded Arena. He has worked on this for a decade and it has many impressive movements as the gladiator circles the flailing serpent. The exhibit is in Deptford in London. I am informed that many would consider it to be on the "wrong" side of the river, but that it is simply incredible.

Surrounded by numerous working drawings, illustrating the ways and mysteries of its creation, Ferelli presents 'The Flooded Arena', a clockwork automaton, owing as much in character to those past mechanical creations of antiquity from Hero of Alexandria, Salomon de Caus, the genius of Arabia’s own 'Golden Age', Al-Jazari, as it does the fantastic cinema of Korda’s 'Thief of Baghdad' and the 'Sinbad' movies of Ray Harryhausen.

Mythology, music, darkness, clockwork powered and lit by magic lantern. Sounds pretty good to me! If you have more details on how exactly how to find this exhibit, leave a comment or send me a note. It appears to be at the offices of DIVUS, which according the article below are located at Enclave 5, 50 Resolution Way London.

Kinetic art by Dolf Perenti uses a fascinating wood escapement

Check out this lovely kinetic sculpture by Dolf Perenti. The various hardwoods and high-grade plywood are combined to form a mechanism called an escapement. These are the heart and soul of clocks. I'm going to let Wikipedia explain escapements further:

An escapement is a device in mechanical watches and clocks that transfers energy to the timekeeping element (the "impulse action") and allows the number of its oscillations to be counted (the "locking action"). The impulse action transfers energy to the clock's timekeeping element (usually a pendulum or balance wheel) to replace the energy lost to friction during its cycle, to keep the timekeeper oscillating. The escapement is driven by force from a coiled spring or a suspended weight, transmitted through the timepiece's gear train. The escapement releases the tooth of a gear, which therefore changes from a "locked" state to a "drive" state until the opposite arm strikes another tooth on the gear, which locks the gear again. A clock's tick is the sound of the gear train stopping as the escapement locks. The gear train is accelerated and decelerated with each tick of the clock. This locking action of the escapement allows each cycle of the timekeeping element to be counted. During each cycle the escapement permits a gear train to advance or escape slightly. The periodic advancement results in moving the timepiece's hands forward at a steady rate. This starting and stopping accounts for most of the energy usage from the spring or weight when a clock is in good working order.

I'm not sure if the one shown here is an esoteric form of escapement or something the artist invented himself. Either way, it's beautifully made and captivating!

Mechanical Marvels: Clockwork Dreams - documentary about automata by Simon Schaffer

You MUST check out this incredible BBC documentary. Presented by Simon Schaffer, the documentary tells the story of automata -- those amazing clockwork machines designed to mimic and recreate life.

From the documentary description:

The film brings the past to life in vivid detail as we see how and why these masterpieces were built. Travelling around Europe, Simon uncovers the history of these machines and shows us some of the most spectacular examples, from an entire working automaton city to a small boy who can be programmed to write and even a device that can play chess. All the machines Simon visits show a level of technical sophistication and ambition that still amazes today.

Schaffer also explains the world in which these mechanical marvels were made: the workers who built them, their role in trade and the industrial revolution, as well as providing information on the designers who invented them. Finally, he shows that these fantastic hybrids of art and engineering are the ancestors of many of our most beloved modern devices.

The Grand Magician automaton by Maillardet answers your questions

Here is some wonderful footage of The Great Magician automaton held in the collections of the Musée international d'horlogerie (International Museum of Horology) in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The piece is attributed to Maillardet, but not Henri Maillardet who made the now famous drawing automaton housed at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Rather, this one appears to have been made by one of his brothers, Jean-David Maillardet with the help of his son, Julien-Auguste and his brother Jacques-Rodolphe.

The magician is a soothsayer, who will answer certain questions contained on small plaques. The plates are inserted into a drawer and, after the appropriate amount of conjuring, the answer appears in a window in the top of the piece. It may not pass a Turing test, but it is a remarkable feat of engineering nevertheless. One of the two automata of this sort held by the museum answers the following questions:

1. A rare thing? (A friend)
2. What is too easily given? (A piece of advice)
3. What brings only illusory happiness (Money)
4. What is the greatest treasure? (Wisdom)
5. What does a girl of fifteen want? (To be sixteen)
6. The confidant of a newly married lady? (A Mirror)
7. A happy error? (Hope)
8. If no plate is put the drawer and the machine set in motion, a small devil appears!

Ingenium: Five Machines That Changed the World

In his book Ingenium, physicist Mark Denny examines five devices -- the bow and arrow, the waterwheel, the counterpoise siege engine, the pendulum clock anchor escapement, and the centrifugal governor. The author combines narrative, illustrations, and even equations to cover the history of each device. As a physicist, he is able to explain the physics behind each machine, how it was used, how it changed over time, and the impact they had on the world.

Astonishing and artful kinetic clocks created by Miki Eleta

Hope on over to A Parallel World to read a great post about the artful kinetic clocks created by Miki Eleta. Miki Eleta was born in 1950 in Visegrad (Bosnia and Herzegovin), but has lived in Switzerland since 1973. He started building kinetic art and clock building in 1996 and continues to this day. He only manufactures unique timepieces. As you might imagine, this is a very complex task. Words from the artist and clock-maker:

What a chance to take part in the manufacturing of a clock!

Writing down notes on a piece of paper, holding on to the ideas, approaching to each other reality and inspiration. Subordinating myself to the play of cogwheels and levers, producing all components myself, learning new techniques – unknown ways open, ideas flash through my mind.

I love this process and I like all the difficulties I have to cope with because they do not occur by chance. Manufacturing a clock means to me feeling life and adventure. I respect all that has been invented so far – but I do not respect the idea that nothing is unknown. Therefore I do not stop searching for surprises, new forms, unknown movements and presentations. The realization of imagination.

Clocks have entered my world of kinetic art and sounds and they remain there. All my works of art are unique and I do not accept any repetition, in no case, there is enough fantasy, inspiration, enthusiasm and motivation.

Wall-mounted wooden marble machine with weight-driven escapement

Derek Hugger wrote in to say that he has spent the past few months designing a fully mechanical marble machine. Titled Kinestrata, the assembly is driven by a 2 1/2 pound weight via the classic Graham Escapement -- named for George Graham (1673-1751)an English clockmaker and inventor who is thought to have created it around 1715.

Kinestrata measures 11 x 17 x 5 inches and contains some 386 parts. The balls roll down 4 unique tracks and are lifted back to the top of the machine by 3 geared lifter rings. Hugger says that it took roughly 400 hours to design and build! Plans should be available for it in the next month or two. We'll keep you posted!

Black Forest flute clock circa 1770 features blackbird automaton

Justin Miller of Blackforestclocks.org sent this video along. This musical clock was made in the Black Forest region around 1770. The piece features a blackbird automaton. The movement plays 5 different birdsong-themed songs at the top of the hour, while the blackbird figure moves from left to right and opens and closes its beak as if singing the tune.

Among the most comprehensive volumes ever produced on the subject, this large format book features over 700 images showcasing the finest examples of clocks made in the Black Forest region.

Build an Edo-style clock that measures unequal hours

I was reading a history book this week called The Discoverers by Daniel J. Boorstin. The first of the three sections of the book deals with the subject of time. The invention of the mechanical clock is a surprisingly recent one. This means that the hour as we know it is also a fairly recent concept. The minute is still more recent. This fact is evident from some of the earliest mechanical clocks in Europe which have no minute hand at all. To this point, this material was familiar to me. It's only when the author turned his attention to the Japanese approach to the hour that my head was sent spinning.

The clocks developed in the Western world divided the day into 24 hours of equal length. This may seem logical to us now, but only because we have lived with it our entire lives. Before the clock was commonplace, a person's day was regulated by the light provided by the sun. In such a world, if you lived anywhere but on the equator, the length of your sunlit day changed with the seasons. If the length of the day changed, why not have the units that divide the day change in length also? This is apparently what the Japanese did.

During the Edo period, the Japanese employed a system of unequal hours based on sunrise and sunset. As the seasons changed, the length of a single hour also changed. It's an interesting concept to try to get your head around, is it not? What is even more fascinating to me is that the Japanese developed a mechanical clock that used this system. As if building a machine to keep regular time wasn't difficult enough, imagine designing one in which the length of an hour changed from day to day. But the complexities don't end there. If the season one was in had short days and long nights, that means hours during the day were shorter than hours at night. Not only do hours change from day to day, but also from day to night!

Imagine my delight, then, when I yesterday I also received a newsletters from the Maker Shed. They are having an overstock sale on various items -- one of which is the Edo-Style Clock Kit shown in the picture above.

I, for one, can't wait to learn how this amazing clock works. I've worked on a few real antique clocks, so much of what I will find in the kit should be familiar to me. If you haven't worked on clocks before, I imagine this kit would be a great introduction to learning how clocks work. Like many of the Gakken kits, the instructions are well-illustrated, but written in Japanese. Problem? Nope. You need only to visit the in-depth assembly guide titled Build a Gakken Edo-Style Clock created by Marc de Vinck that is posted on the Make Projects web site. The picture above comes from that project guide.

Though the Gakken Double-foliot Japanese Clock Kit is available from Amazon, the price is far better in the Maker Shed.

Artistic clock incorporating unexpected materials and mechanisms

Prepare to be amazed by this work of kinetic art disguised as a clock. The piece, titled The Clock Tower , was created by Forrest Burnett.

Within the design, there are all kinds of interesting details, artistic flourishes, and somewhat unexpected mechanisms. The Clock Tower incorporates various materials including wood, plywood, brass, steel, and several others I cannot name with confidence.

The mechanism includes (among many other things) bass ladder chain, a Geneva wheel with eight stations, and a centrifugal fly-ball governor. The text within the video notes that the clock uses an escapement 2 1/2 second timing. A dragon graces the dial of the clock itself.

This is some inventive and beautiful work that has been very well crafted.

The common cuckoo clock is just one form of animate clock that was produced in the Black Forest region of Germany. They are cute, charming, and relatively simple. Author and collector, Justin Miller, has had a fascination with the more obscure forms of Black Forest clocks for years. He a new book on the subject. The magazine Collector's Weekly recently interviewed Miller on the subject in an article titled "Not Your Grandma’s Cuckoo: Decapitating, Rat-Eating Clocks of the Black Forest".

From the article's introduction:

As the first truly comprehensive English-language guide to early Black Forest horology, Miller’s new book, "Rare and Unusual Black Forest Clocks," features particularly interesting examples of clocks with automata, or moving mechanical features. These range from timepieces used as mini-jukeboxes to play different tunes to clocks with animated figures who dance, eat, or even murder each other.

The interview covers where cuckoo clocks originated and its association with the Black Forest region. Miller also answers questions about singing bird clocks and other musical clock variations. He touches on how these clocks work and explains a bit about the original market for these clocks, some famous makers, and favorites from his collection of 80 Black Forest clocks.

Lone figure surrounded by tiny cubes driven by clockwork

Video of this kinetic sculpture made the rounds on various blogs some time ago, but I don't think I ever got around to posting it here. This fascinating piece is by multidisciplinary artist Levi van Veluw.

Each facet of the unusually shaped object is actually a door covered with wood veneer. When opened, they reveal a lone figure, also covered in wood and surrounded by small cubes suspended in air by thin wires. A lever on the base of the sculpture allows a hidden clockwork motor to be wound, while another sets the piece in motion. In motion, the seated figure slowly rotates, while each of the small cubes does too, requiring 100 gears total. Here's a shot of the mechanism inside the base.
