After seeing the beautiful use of gears in Bill Durovchic's kinetic sculpture, I started looking for books on gears. The following books all look good and get great ratings from Amazon's vast customer base.

If you want some free info, the Boston Gear gear catalog is downloadable from their website: http://bostongear.com/literature/index.asp Halfway down the page in the Open Gearing section. The Engineering Section in the back is pretty good. It won't teach you to cut metal gears, but for anyone wanting an introduction to how teeth are shaped and sized, it's a good free source of info.
