Awesome walking paper robot uses rubber band for power source
First of all: this thing is SO awesome.
The making of this amazing walking bipedal robot is documented in a rapid series of photographs strung into a video. The robot is made almost exclusively of paper, with the exception of some wooden shafts and an elastic band which serves as the power source.
I wonder if the design is based on (or at least inspired by) one of the many tin toy wind-up walking robot designs. It would be nice if I could read the site. Perhaps I will try Google Translate a bit later.
The gears look like they are solid, as if perhaps made up of many sheets of paper glued together in a thick stack. You can spot a crown gear in there if you watch closely. There are some really ingenious construction techniques. This is worth viewing more than once. I think I want to try working in paper sometime soon.
There are PDF files available for download on the site and they may be plans. I haven't had time to explore them yet. If any of the good readers of The Automata Blog finds out what we are dealing with here, please post a comment or drop me a line. Thanks in advance for your help!
See more amazing mechanical paper models on the creator's web site (in Japanese).

Unfortunately pdf files on that site are just instructions. All the wonderful models from this creator are on sale.
Anyway this robot is really amazing!
Hi Doug,
That's an amazing machine by any standards of home tinkering, but to make a machine of this complexity out of paper and card is stunning! I reckon that it's walking gait is smoother than the Robosapien toy currently produced by Wowwee toys - and they had a NASA fella on their design team...
Plans for this and some of his other designs are available on his site, either as PDF or on a disc, and he also recommends using the video as a reference as you go along - probably good advice considering it's complexity. Price wise it's all in Yen so you'd just have to do the conversion.
I'd love to have a go but I still have an orrery to finish. Doh!
Right, with that in mind, back to the workshop I guess.
Keep up the good work Doug - you've found some real gems lately. Thanks for all your efforts.
Dave.
This page: http://www.geocities.jp/kikousya290821/pr3sample.htm has PDFs that seem to include all the parts plus pictorial instructions on construction.

Hi, Dug
What I discovered through a very fast visit to the site is that the Tea Doll is free and available (as pdf) at the address: http://www.geocities.jp/kikousya290821/tc.htm
Though it is not a real walking robot, it is an interesting model.
The walking robot (PR-III, Paper Robot) costs about 25 euros and it is available as CD-Rom or as a printed Kit. Unfortunately there is no downloadable version, if I see correctly.
Ciao,

Thanks so much for the updates everyone! It's very helpful to me and everyone else who reads this blog.

Are there a new website or link where I can download the blueprints for the robot?
