Here is a wood automaton of a man in a canoe by Stuart Chalmers. You can see that the mechanism is made up of just a crank shaft. It's hard to make out, but the crank arms are shaped like fish.
I very much like the use of contrasting woods for the mechanism and the box.
You can see
a few other automata by Stuart Chalmers on his web site.

Thanks Falk! ]
So is this a monofilament actuated automota?
ReplyDeleteMichael,
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I am not sure. I can't make it out in the video. I think your guess is a good one.

Dug,
ReplyDeleteThanks for featuring my automata. I've been a regular viewer for a year, so it's an honour to see my work featured on your blog.
Cheers,
Stuart
Michael,
You are correct it uses fishing line. The monofilament is attached to the left shoulder blade of the canoeist creating the necessary lever for the paddling motion. I put a photo on my web page which makes it a little clearer. http://www.blinkofaneye.co.uk/Automata.html
Thanks,

Stuart, nice work. I'd seen your woodworker automata on youtube, Great mechanism and movement there. I'm trying to design an automata of woodworkers in a shop using hand tools. Have the plane and saw mech done, working on the hammering and drilling mechanisms. Great work.
